Giving thanks or feeling genuine appreciation is one of the greatest and most valuable feelings you can cultivate in your life. This feeling opens the doors for more and more delicious things and experiences to feel grateful toward. In this article, I will be sharing 6 ways on how to practice gratitude daily and more often, and make the feeling of thankfulness as natural to you as it should be. 🙂
1. Have the knowing that you are always enough as you are.
Whatever stage you are in your life now, knowing that you are perfect just the way you’re being right now, will greatly add to your sense of worthiness, and having no lack of any kind. This general feeling of being satisfied with yourself and with where you are will inspire the specific things to feel appreciation for, about the life you’re currently living. Instead of noticing what’s lacking, you will naturally come to appreciate all the things that you are enjoying now, as well as all the things that are still on their way into your experience. Maintaining this sense of gratitude for being enough in your every present moment will keep your heart open for the blessings in the here and now, and for all that is yet to come.
2. Acknowledge the subtle internal feelings, and not just the external things to be thankful for.
Alongside the tangible and material things that you can thankfully recognize in your life, you can likewise feel appreciation for all kinds of positive feelings as they come and deliberately amplify them in your experience. Feelings of relaxation, peacefulness, harmony, calmness, certainty and clarity are some of the emotions you can feel thankful for, and you can consciously focus on how good they make you feel. These feelings are usually left unnoticed and are rarely acknowledged or verbalized, but as you deliberately take note of them, you are adding energy momentum toward these positive feelings. This will allow you to practice being in the frequency of gratitude longer, expand your scope of gratitude, and make it a natural and logical feeling you are inclined to move toward often.
3. Start the day with the conscious intention to look for what’s pleasing.
Feeling appreciation is all about focus and intention. When you set the intention, your mind will deliberately look for things that are in alignment with what’s good and positive. Give your attention to what’s working, and stay away from complaints and criticism. Be focused in looking for an excuse to feel thankfulness and appreciation. Talk about your favorite things. Speak of the positive aspects of the people around you. Give praise and positive feedback whenever you have the opportunity to. Ask yourself questions like, doesn’t this taste good? Isn’t this nice? How wonderful is that? Be more often in the state of being receptive to what feels the best.
4. Practice first on things that are easy to be thankful for and then build up the momentum.
Don’t push too hard or put too much effort on maintaining a state of gratitude, but rather let it flow naturally from you. Start by finding something that you’re not trying hard about or faking about, and let an authentic appreciation gain its momentum. It doesn’t matter how big or small the object of your attention is. The vibration that you are practicing is what matters. When something feels good, big or small, ask yourself why it feels good for you and get the engine moving towards more and more reasons why it’s gratifying. And before you know it, you are in a flow state of feeling grateful towards everything and everyone you lay your eyes on.
5. Recognize the hidden value in contrasting experiences.
Instead of focusing on a difficulty or problem, shift your attention to the solution that will be created as a result of a contrasting experience, and then feel a sense of “thankfulness in advance” for the good outcome that this contrast will produce. Tune to the vibration of having the solution already in place and feel appreciation for the future improved condition that is sure to come. Always know that in every contrasting experience, there is an automatic creation of something better that will come along, because everything in life is always in forward motion towards more evolution and advancement. And recognizing the value of the contrast as a necessary part of the unfolding of the good finds and treasures of your life, will make way for a thankful attitude towards the seeming mishaps or troubles of daily living.
6. Surround yourself with people who are also in the habit of feeling thankful.
Let the energy around you be more conducive to looking for what’s good about where you are instead of harboring hatred and anger about a lot of different things. The energy that you allow in your environment will influence the kinds of thoughts that you will perpetuate in your mind. Choose the company of thankful and appreciative people, and increase your tendency to look positively and gratefully towards life.
